When is a tyre irreparable?

  • The tyre has suffered some serious damage in a crash and the puncture is quite huge and deep. In such a condition, there’ll be too much air loss and your tyres won’t be able to function well.
  • There’s some internal damage to the tyre due to a deep cut, then the repair shouldn’t even be tried. As this would mean compromising with the safety of the car in general.The sidewalls are said to be a sturdy part of the tyre. If the sidewall has suffered some serious damage, then it shouldn’t be repaired.
  • Run-flat tyres shouldn’t be repaired as it’s difficult to determine whether they suffered damage after or before the puncture.


In all the above situations, tyre repairs shouldn’t be carried out. Replacing the tyre with a new one is the only option here.




How should the repair be done?


Before the mechanic begins the repair, the tyre must be inspected thoroughly. For this, it must be taken off the rim first and then deflated. The puncture is patched and sealed to support the tyre wholly.


What should I avoid during a puncture?


You shouldn’t use sealants or emergency infiltrators to treat a puncture. Sealants get frozen in cold weather and can further damage your tyre pressure monitoring system.
Another quick fix is a plug or a patch, which shouldn’t be relied upon for long. If they need to be used, then both should be used as using them separately is not going to solve your problem.
